3D printing resin filtration

Resin filtration is crucial in the 3D printing process as it significantly impacts the quality and precision of 3D prints. During resin usage, especially with prolonged use, there can be a buildup of contaminants such as fine particles from cured resin or other external impurities, leading to undesired defects in prints. Filtrating the resin ensures a cleaner and more stable resin flow during the printing process, ultimately improving print quality and repeatability.
Filter the resin if:
- Prints have failed partially or completely, especially when supports are damaged.
- Cured resin sticks to the bottom of the resin tray during printing.
- Any impurities are noticed while stirring the resin in the tray.
- Every time you pour resin out of the tray.
Uncured resin and cleaning alcohol can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Use nitrile gloves, and in case of spills, wash skin with plenty of soap and water.
To filter the resin, you’ll need:
- Resin filter with a 190-micron mesh density
- Silicone spatula
- Filter stand
- Nitrile gloves
Filtering steps:
- Place the filter on the filter stand.
- Position the resin bottle centrally under the filter to avoid spills.
- Tilt the resin tray directly over the filter and slowly pour into the filter. Note: The resin stream will initially split into three before merging into one stream.
- Gently collect any remaining resin residue from the tray using the silicone spatula.
- Once all the resin has passed through the filter, you can pour it back into the tray.
Disposal of waste must comply with regulations. It’s advisable to contact local waste management or recycling centers to determine the proper disposal options for 3D resin waste.
